چکیده

Fields of wind velocity, divergence, and reflectivity were derived from Doppler radar measurements in a New England storm over a 6-hr. period. 9 laycr of casterlies near the surfncc increased in depth and speed during the period. Above this layer the wind veered with hcight to SW and W, and then backed to SW. Changes in wind dircction with time in thc layer bctween 4 and 6 km. indicr)ted the pnssagc of mesoscale short wave troughs. Layers of convergence and divergence, alternating with height, appeared to bc related to the wind regions.

Processing of Doppler radar radial winds for data assimilation

Atmospheric wind field is 3-dimensional and variable over time and space. Doppler radar measures one component of the wind vector, ie. the radar radial component. For complete description of the wind field simultaneous measurements should be made with three Doppler radars. Usually only one radar is available and the availability of the other two radars is compencated by simplifying assumptions ...

A three-dimensional variational single-Doppler velocity retrieval method with simple conservation equation constraint

In this paper, a new three-dimensional variational analysis scheme capable of retrieving three-dimensional winds from single Doppler observations of convective storms is developed. The method incorporates, in a single cost function, Doppler radar observations, a background field, smoothness and mass continuity constraints, and the residual of reflectivity or radial velocity conservation. By min...

J1j.4 Multiple Doppler Wind Analysis and Assimilation via 3dvar Using Simulated Observations of the Planned Casa Network and Wsr-88d Radars

The advantages of using Doppler weather radar to track and forecast mesoscale severe weather events are widely known to both meteorologists and the public. With the use of Doppler radar, meteorologists can provide better information to the public, ultimately saving lives and property, by remotely observing the internal structure of thunderstorms at high resolution. Despite its highly advanced c...

A Multiple-Doppler Synthesis and Continuity Adjustment Technique (MUSCAT) to Recover Wind Components from Doppler Radar Measurements

A new approach is presented to account for a simultaneous solution of the three wind components from at least a pair of Doppler radar observations, which could remove potential drawbacks of an iterative (nonsimultaneous) solution of Cartesian dual-Doppler analysis techniques. The multiple-Doppler synthesis and continuity adjustment technique (MUSCAT) is derived from the extended overdetermined ...

Using CASA IP1 to Diagnose Kinematic and Microphysical Interactions in a Convective Storm

Data from the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) Integrated Project I (IP1) network of polarimetric X-band radars are used to observe a convective storm. A fuzzy logic hydrometeor identification algorithm is employed to study microphysical processes. Dual-Doppler techniques are used to analyze the 3D wind field. The scanning strategy, sensitivity, and low-level scanning foc...
